The Calgary Foundation for Swimming Excellence was established in 2006 in support of both the University of Calgary's successful Elite Swim Program and  the void left by the departure of the National Training Center.  The Calgary Foundation for Swimming Excellence is a private charitable foundation that funds swimming excellence programs through swimming programs based at the University of Calgary Swimming.  As the model expands, strategic alliances may be formed with other organizations.  Centered at the University of Calgary, it will use training, competition, and other facilities as needed to impact performance.

Swimming programs based at the University of Calgary have led Canadian swimming since 1980.  The overall program is a swim club of approximately 280 swimmers, aged between 6 and 28 years, a Varsity program of 36 university swimmers, and a National Swim Center of 6 swimmers.  The program operates in a local community of 1,200 competitive swimmers, has 25% of the market, and close to 98% of the Senior Nationally Ranked swimmers.   As of the summer of 2005, the swimming program at the University put 10 swimmers on the Canadian National Team.  This is more than any other swimming organization in Canada and is 16% of the National Team.  Competitive swimming is one of the premier Olympic Sports and the third largest sport in the world, behind soccer and track and field, truly making this an amazing accomplishment.

The program has delivered over 30 swimmers to Canadian Olympic Teams, and many more to the Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and other world competitions.  Over the years, many swimmers, including Tom Ponting, Andrea Nugent, and Curtis Myden, have brought home many medals from the Olympics.  Mark Tewksbury, a University of Calgary swimmer, brought home the pinnacle of gold at the Barcelona Summer Olympic Games.

At the World Aquatic Championships held in Montreal, Mike Brown achieved a silver medal in the men's 200 meter Breaststroke in Canadian Record time.  This is the fifth time in the last year that he has done this and dramatically lowered the old record held by Victor Davis.  He is also the gold medalist from the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006.
